live tilting and 1500

July 4, 2009 by Nick Wealthall

After a just over a week of live poker it’s finally got me tilted!

I just spend 12 hours playing a deep stack event to bubble the money. That didn’t bother me too much but what has got to me is the how slow live poker is. It’s constantly held up by slow dealers, sorting out antes, moving tables and on and on.

I think I could deal with all of this if only the players would act faster. I mean fine take your time over a big decision but when you raise and someone reraises you please don’t take 4 bloody minutes to fold. It’s like a big face saving exercise as they come to terms with the fact the don’t have the chips or the balls to do anying about it.

It’s hard not to let things like this bother you. Today there was a point at which we played 2 hands in 9 minutes – I know I was watching the clock!!!

Of course there’s nothing to be done about this I just have to have my zen like calm. I’ve had this for most of the trip but not today! On the hand I went out I shoved over the top of the cut offs open for about 16 big blinds and he thought for about a literal 4 or 5 minutes before calling with AJs- which is a ridiculously easy call. I didn’t exit gracefully as he got some verbals for his ridiculous procrastination

Anyway I’m going to take 2 days off before playing the main event to get some really good rest and some down time from the felt.

Oh I played the WSOP 1500 as a warm up for the main event. Played for 13 hours which I think was good for around 350th out of the 2800 that entered. It was good experience and easily the biggest (in terms of numbers) live event I’ve played. The old maxim is true you just play your table. I sat at 25 big blinds for frickin hours which is not fun but keeps you on your toes. Not too many interesting hands but one thing that works really well out here is bluff raising when weak players lead small ish – or calling the turn and bluff raising the river

My exit hand was pretty funny. Had 9 big blinds with a tonne of dead money in the middle. It was folded round to me and I pretended to look then shoved. The small blind waited half a second to over shove – and the big blind waited at least 2 seconds to over shove again…why wouldn’t they have AK andQQ??? Sadly my 10 3 offsuit didn’t hold up – why do all my good hands get cracked??

Play well – run better
