EPT Grand Finals + Poker Action

May 5, 2009 by Brian Townsend

The past week I spend in Monte Carlo, where I busted from the tournament on day one. I was really worried I wouldn’t play well this past week since I was a bit over poker. I actually played amazingly well at the tournament, even though I got busted on day one.

I made one mistake where I flatted an UTG raise with J9s from a loose player. We took the flop four ways and it came down T83 with a flush draw. We had about 50BB and the UTG player C-bet. Next to act folded and I raised a committing amount. The SB over called with a set of 3’s and a I bricked out. I think post flop is very standard, but my preflop play is marginal, but by no means terrible.

There is a ton of value in these live tournaments. I was shocked how passive some of my opponents were at the table. I saw people consistently flatting raises from the small blind to a button open with hands as strong as JJ. They weren’t even trapping, they were just “unsure where they were” or didn’t want to commit alot of chips. There was only one other opponent at the table who was reraising preflop with any consistency.

So after busting I put in some hands at the cash tables. In the past week I played 7000 hands ranging from 25/50-200/400. I am usually very hard on myself and critical of my play, but this past week I think I played really well despite being stuck 36k. I am up 2bb/100 since most of my losses came in a really tough HU match that I played the evening I busted.

I was playing ChipUniter and he was play incredibly aggressive RR tons of pots and potting every street. I think he may have put me on tilt, but I think overall I played very well.

Here is an example of his aggression. Like is he value betting the river? I don’t really know…

I lost a bunch of really standard hands against him, that I think my play is fine.

I guess not 100% standard since I was trapping, but the money was going in somewhere.

Not to bad in terms of equity, but hes pretty crushed when I RR here.

I should probably fold preflop. I think I played this poorly and was tilting a bit.

http://weaktight.com/1063065

Again not bad in terms of equity, but I don’t like my opponents play…

http://weaktight.com/1046309

This hand really frustrated me. My opponent is RR such a wide range, this is so standard, just sucks to run into QQ…

http://weaktight.com/1063070

Probably to thin here, but he was RR such a wide range and barreling so many turns. Still probably a fold, but I think in retrospect I was tilting because I was down 150k.

http://weaktight.com/1046311

Again pretty marginal on my part. I have an over pair with two backdoors, but still probably to thin. I felt like he would 3 bet fold some on this board though that may have been wishful thinking.

So the match ended with me losing 160k to Chip Uniter.

A few days later I put in some hands at 200/400 and 100/200 where I didn’t run great as well. I think I played really well though and that’s all you can do.

A good flop for me, but my hand doesn’t hold against Aces…

Pretty standard I think, to bad I got a really poor flop…

Here I get three streets of value.

Here I get very lucky…

http://weaktight.com/1063217

I flop the nuts and am a big underdog. I hate flat calling the flop though.

http://weaktight.com/1063251

Here my aces don’t hold up.

Overall I am really happy with my play except possibly some play against ChipUniter where I tilted. I had some nice wins at 25/50 so I am only down 35k over that week.
