Day One of 40K

May 29, 2009 by Brian Townsend

I ended day one of the 40k WSOP event with 609k in chips. I wasn’t getting much credit all day and getting called down lightly. Early in the day I reraised a French player with 42s and checked a A84 all club flop. The turn was great as it was a 4 and I got two streets of value from his ace.

Beyond this I won and lost two flips against short stacks, once when I held KQ against FBT’s 99 and losing with AK to the french players TT. So I hung around 200k for most of the day. Then in the last round as the blinds began increasing I grew my stack to about 300k when I coolered Whitelime with my aces when he held kings.

One thing that really shocked me was the poor play in the tournament. Some players who are well respected in the poker communities played very poorly today. It really surprised me how people who would never consider losing 40k in a cash game ponyed up the money for the tournament. I think tournaments are better for that gamblers mentality as people love the idea of buying in for 40k and winning 2million while cash games don’t have that upside potential. I would have expected the play to be much higher in a tournament with this type of buy in.

Sorry for the short entry, but I am beat and gonna crash.
