July Wrap Up…
July 31, 2009 by Brian Townsend
July was a very nice month for me. I put in alot of action at the nose bleeds and did well. In total I ended +280k for the month.
As for my goals I didn’t do as well as I would have liked.
1) Play 10k hands of limit O8, no higher than 50/100
2) Play 5k hands of Stud or Stud 8
3) Watch of make a video from on of the mixed games everyday.
4) have a winning month at 25/50 PLO
Of these four goals I accomplished only one. I ended up having a winning month at 25/50 PLO which feels great after losing 300k their. As I said earlier I probably wasn’t playing my best when I lost 300k, but still it just shows the variance in the games. I want to be very carefully when playing 200/400 and 300/600 with an ante because I believe a winning player could lose 3 million in those games.
The ante makes the PLO games play so much bigger. Most of my 300k downswing came in the ante games which I think almost doubles the size of the game. So 25/50 with an ante is almost as big as playing 50/100.
So the goals I set were a bit lofty so for August I want to set goals I think I can accomplish. I probably could have completed my July goals if it weren’t for all the action at higher stakes. I also had alot of real life stuff to deal with.
So my goals for August are
1) play 10k hands of mixed games no higher than 40/80.
2) watch a mixed game video twice a week
3) Only play big PLO when games are good, I am rested and focused.
Things have been going amazingly well this year for me. This could easily be my best year has a poker player not only financially but also in terms of the troubles I have had with multiaccounting and downswings at PLO. I know when things go really well I get complacent and don’t play my best. Hopefully I can keep my focus and drive that I have had all year and finish up strong.
A couple of big pots from the past few days.

cant get enough
July 30, 2009 by Nick Wealthall
My plan was – come back from Vegas, sort out my life, take a break from poker and catch up with work and – you know – my career.
There’s a catch in there, the whole take a break from poker thing.
4 nights ago a solid 3 days or so into my ‘break’ I decided to log on and play a few hands. I have to guilty confess to you (which is anyone) that I’ve played every night since. In fact last night I played for 6 hours and the sun was up when I finished
Before we start throwing words around casually like ‘addiction’ ‘problem’ and ‘degeneracy’ let’s remember it’s me and I’m probably really responsible and in control of my life when it comes to the crunch?!
The thing is I know I’m about to go into a big slug or work and productivity and like a rebellious child I’m putting it off
Also the Omaha games have been great and I’m running hot. When you’re on a winning run it’s so hard not to play and so much fun to play
Anyway despite that some exciting things are happening with work stuff which I’ll update you on next time
Being back in England is always such a weird adjustment after the yearly pilgrimage to Vegas. The first thing I noticed this time is that everything is really really clammy. There is no air conditioning. I’m sure this is good for the environment or some such but seriously can we get some AC in here?
The second problem is no room service. Now I don’t want to sound like the spoilt brat I almost certainly am but it’s so easy to get used to that thing where you get hungry at 2.30 am and they bring you an entire dinner without you moving. I’ve called family, I’ve called friends, I’ve called my neighbours – no one will do it for me….no one?!!
Gotta go time to definitely not play poker.
Swings…
July 27, 2009 by admin
First I have been on the good side of the PLO swings the past couple of days. The swings in these big PLO (Or any PLO game) are so sick. In the past two months I have had two 600k swings. Most sessions I am swinging 10BI’s and even had a downswing of 300k at 25/50. Its just massive amount of variance. I was pretty depressed after my last session where I lost 300k and 600k in 3 days. I played really well except for one short session where I was a bit tired.
This losing even effected my personal life where I was rude and short with some family members. I really hate when poker effects my personal life. It rarely does but this loss really hurt for some reason even though I was only down 60k or so for the month.
So today I sat down and boom I win 340,000 in 161 hands. I had a great day the past two days as well winning about 80k putting me at +360k for the month. Here are some of the hands over the past few days.
Please hold…
Always nice to wake up to aces with that action in front.
A nice suckout.
A bit of FPS.
Don’t bluff me!
Don’t bluff me again!
Some days you play PLO and the board pairs every single time you have a flush and they have a set. Luckily for me I have been fading everything the past couple of days.

The End of a Heater
July 25, 2009 by admin
PLO can make you feel like the greatest poker player in the world and then the next session make you feel like the worst. I was going to post some losing hands from the nice heater I had but didn’t get around to it as I have been playing alot the past few days. Unfortunately my results have been very poor with me losing 450k. In one session I played great, and really brought my A+ game but managed to lose 350k. The session from two days ago I wasn’t playing great and was on my C+ game and lost another 100k.
I was up about 1.5 million on the year and it really sucks to lose 1/3 of that in two days. I am not very happy about it and I hope I turn it around soon.
This hand sums up my last two days really well.
I do know one thing I am very confident that I am going to have really great results in these 200/400 PLO games. I just hope they keep running.

Exciting times
July 23, 2009 by Mark Stuart
This is my first post since Vegas and, as predicted, the break was just what I needed. Despite losing money overall, mostly due to getting sucked out on three times in a drunken cash game in the Venetian, I now realise how much my game has come on. I mean, it’s obviously not that great or I’d be playing for a living, but sitting with the tourists and even keen recreational players in Vegas, I could see that my game and thought processes were so far ahead of theirs it’s not true.
So where do I go from here? Well, I can say with hand on heart that for the first time in months I’m genuinely excited by poker again. It feels like a brand new start and a fresh challenge now that I’m dedicating a lot of my time to playing cash. It feels like I’m learning poker all over again – and it’s great! That heady rush as you sit down for a session not knowing what’s in store and hoping for a table full of fish just waiting to donk off their hard-earned money. I can almost smell it.
Part of this great feeling I’m having definitely came with getting the sit-and-go monkey off my back. I had gone through a long and brutal downswing in SNGs and they are such a grind it’s not true. It really wore me down and was definitely stunting my creativity and enjoyment of the game. So I’ve finally quit them, and I’m enjoying playing so much more. For now I’m finding my feet in the .25/.50 cash games online and playing some MTTs and satellites for fun. And that’s what poker feels like at the moment – fun! Long may it last!
Despite the bankroll hit that I took with my SNG problems, at least I got something out of it – I cashed in my 50,000 FPPs on Stars and bought a new 32-inch LCD TV and 24-inch Samsung monitor. And once you’ve multi-tabled on a decent-sized screen there’s no going back…
I love Darvin Moon
July 23, 2009 by Nick Wealthall
Hey kids – so ….um…. i love Darvin Moon
The WSOP chip leader has stolen my heart
In doing this I’m believing everything he’s said and I’ve seen written about him – which is retarded of me but what the heck I want to believe
This guy has everything i don’t have but want. He’s totally comfortable in everything in his life and totally uncorruptable. He says he won’t take endorsments because he doesn’t want anyone being able to tell him what to do and claims he’s never going to play the main event again.
This is an ‘everyman’ for the ages. I’m dreaming and praying we get him vs Ivey in the head up. The poker snob and fanboy in me will pull like crazy for Ivey but how can you not root for someone like Darvin.
In other news I’m back in the UK trying to get back to normal life. I go through this nonsense everytime I come back from Vegas – as if I give two */£&s about normal life
Answering and writing emails, invoicing, catching up on work it’s all edge of the seat stuff
i’m taking a break from playing for a week or two due to being pokered out from playing a ridiculous amount in Vegas. also despite being really happy with how i’ve played the last 2 months I’m disappointed with my results so want a break to prevent feeling ‘ground down’
going back home now to see some long time friends and my family – those are the bits of ‘normal life’ that really rock!
The Shipping News

I won my first online no-limit hold’em tournament for quite a while on the 16th July. I play the $16.50 turbo that starts at 22.40 on Stars quite a lot, it’s a fun tourney to play as it usually gets over 2k runners and generates a first prize of $5k plus and is done in under four hours. I’ve bubbled the final twice in the past so it was all the more sweeter to win it. I went to the final table tied for the chiplead and allthough the joint chip leader was on my left i was always in control, well as much as you can be in a turbo tournament and the $5,519 that i got for first is my biggest single win on Stars. I might put the final table up on a re-player such as the Cardrunners one. The win really couldn’t have come at a better time as Friday 17th July was my last day as Strategy Editor of PokerPlayer. I’m now a freelance journalist/semi-pro poker player. I’m quite excited about not working a 9-5/10-6 as i’m definitelynot a morning person. I think i could get used to the get up at midday, do a few hours work in the afternoon, play poker in the evening/early morning, routine that i’ve been keeping this past week.
Lots of 200/400 action and a nice heater
July 22, 2009 by admin
The past few days have been going really well for me at 200/400. There has been alot of games running and they have been really good games. I am up about 400k (330k at 200/400 and the rest at 25/50-100/200) in the past few days thought I have been staking someone and am down 100k in that. I have been playing really well and focused and using good discipline on what games to play. I think I have an edge against most any 6 handed lineup but I still don’t want to play unless I feel as though I have a large edge.
I used to not really care much about game selection but in the past year I have started to play when games are good, particularly at 200/400. 200/400 with an ante plays so big with such huge amounts of variance. In the sessions I would constantly be swinging 10 BI’s. Game selecting well helps me lower this variance as my winrate will be higher. That said there is still huge amounts of variance in these games and I bet a winning player could lose 2M playing 200/400 PLO with an ante.
Now for the big hands, and there have been some massive ones.
I am surprised I am only up 30k in expectation over the past few days. I know that doesn’t mean to much but I felt like I was running very hot. I guess I have been on the good side of coolers.
I suck at folding. Weeeee!!!!!
51% equity for the 200k pot…
cooler with the nuts vs 2nd nuts
AAxx vs KKxx allin preflop
Once in awhile I get tricky. I like my opponents call as my hand looks alot like a draw.
A couple push and pray hands. I am happy to go 1-1 in them.
Sucking out on top two…
Getting it in vs top set.
Not to see a raise and reraise when you limp with aces
I was lucky to have 50% equity here.
winning with kings vs aces.
I will do the losing hands in the next blog entry as this is getting really long.
